Drug Treatment vs Not doing drugs in the first place?

Ujyathica asked:

Should somebody who did lots of drugs (coke….) and was an alcoholic who then went and got treatment to become clean be considered a better man (might not be the right phrase) or just better than somebody who never did drugs, and doesn’t drink. Just because the other, went through and over came his/her disorder, instead of avoiding the problem entirely.

Summary of the question. Is it better to learn from others mistakes as the, or is it better to learn from your own mistakes?

It’s confusing, for me because i see all these people being praised for getting treatment for something so stupid like drugs and alcohol. while those who never touch the poison are ignored. IE, a huge presentation at my university about some girl who almost died from alcohol poisoning but then became totally sober, and i couldn’t help but wonder, why aren’t they doing this presentation for somebody who was intelligent enough to not start drinking in the first place?
